Also known as 'Asteroid Feeders' or 'Scum Cleaners'.
These space creatures are some of the most mysterious in the galaxy. It is unknown how they evolved, though some suspect they were one of the first few living creatures to be created at the dawn of the universe.
They resemble a black ellipse, with one long protrusion on one end, thought to be either a feeler or a tail of sorts, and two shorter feelers on the other end. Examination of corpses also revealed gill-like segments on their bodies, and an orifice that could be a mouth.
These creatures are found primarily around asteroid belts, particularly the more dangerous ones. They will feed on anything that gets smashed onto them. Occasionally, they will migrate in large flocks (or schools). They are harmless, however, they can, in large numbers, create powerful and disruptive electromagnetic fields that can mess with a ship's controls, especially the smaller ones. Fortunately, the IGSD have created maps which signal the ordinary migration times and routes of the Coleacanthu. They (usually) abide by these routes, and the times that a ship is damaged by the Coleacanthu are very rare. Nonetheless, it has happened at times. Being caught in a Bolidum school is classified as a Code Yellow danger according to the IGSD.
The studies that have been conducted on this species is limited, as they cannot survive without extreme temperatures and low oxygen and pressure levels. In a ship safe for humans, they will die off in about half a minute. It is so far unknown how they manage to survive in empty space.
